Record quantum entanglement of multiple dimensions: Two Schrödinger cats which could be alive, dead, or in 101 other states simultaneously

An international team of researchers, directed by researchers from the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and with participation from the Universitat Aut?noma de Barcelona, has managed to create an entanglement of 103 dimensions with only two photons. The record had been established at 11 dimensions. The discovery could represent a great advance toward the construction of quantum computers with much higher processing speeds than current ones, and toward a better encryption of information.

The states in which elementary particles, such as photons, can be found have properties which are beyond common sense. Superpositions are produced, such as the possibility of being in two places at once, which defies intuition. In addition, when two particles are entangled a connection is generated: measuring the state of one (whether they are in one place or another, or spinning one way or another, for example) affects the state of the other particle instantly, no matter how far away from each other they are.

Scientists have spent years combining both properties to construct networks of entangled particles in a state of superposition. This in turn allows constructing quantum computers capable of operating at unimaginable speeds, encrypting information with total security and conducting experiments in quantum mechanics which would be impossible to carry out otherwise.

Until now, in order to increase the "computing" capacity of these particle systems, scientists have mainly turned to increasing the number of entangled particles, each of them in a two-dimensional state of superposition: a qubit (the quantum equivalent to an information bit, but with values which can be 1, 0 or an overlap of both values). Using this method, scientists managed to entangle up to 14 particles, an authentic multitude given its experimental difficulty.

The research team was directed by Anton Zeilinger and Mario Krenn from the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. It included the participation of Marcus Huber, researcher from the Group of Quantum Information and Quantum Phenomena from the UAB Department of Physics, as well as visiting researcher at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO). The team has advanced one more step towards improving entangled quantum systems.

In a new article posted on arXiv, scientists described how they managed to achieve a quantum entanglement with a minimum of 103 dimensions with only two particles. "We have two Schr?dinger cats which could be alive, dead, or in 101 other states simultaneously," Huber jokes, "plus, they are entangled in such a way that what happens to one immediately affects the other." The results implies a record in quantum entanglements of multiple dimensions with two particles, established until now at 11 dimensions.

Instead of entangling many particles with a qubit of information each, scientists generated one single pair of entangled photons in which each could be in more than one hundred states, or in any of the superpositions of theses states; something much easier than entangling many particles. These highly complex states correspond to different modes in which photons may find themselves in, with a distribution of their characteristic phase, angular momentum and intensity for each mode.

"This high dimension quantum entanglement offers great potential for quantum information applications. In cryptography, for example, our method would allow us to maintain the security of the information in realistic situations, with noise and interference. In addition, the discovery could facilitate the experimental development of quantum computers, since this would be an easier way of obtaining high dimensions of entanglement with few particles," explains UAB researcher Marcus Huber.

Now that the results demonstrate that obtaining high dimension entanglements is accessible, scientists conclude in the article that the next step will be to search how they can experimentally control these hundreds of spatial modes of the photons in order to conduct quantum computer operations.

#Facebook gets #hashtags, which does #WTF to your #privacy?

facebook logoFor those Facebook users who are allergic to any notion of privacy whatsoever and would prefer that the entire world be privy to contents of their #dinner or antics of their adorable #children, Wednesday was a high and holy day indeed, for that was the day that Facebook embraced the hashtag.

The company announced that starting on Wednesday, users would be able to add clickable hashtags to posts, similar to Twitter (for whom user Chris Messina invented the hashtag back in 2007), Instagram, Tumblr, or Pinterest.

Clicking on a hashtag will lead you to a feed that shows what other people and pages are saying about the hashtagged subject.

As Messina said about his hashtag rationale, he wasn't interested in other people's talk about creating official groups on Twitter.

Rather, he was more interested in enabling eavesdropping:

I’m more interested in simply having a better eavesdropping experience on Twitter.

To that end, I focused my thinking on contextualization, content filtering and exploratory serendipity within the Twittosphere.

With hashtags, Facebook is also interested in eavesdropping, aka encouraging users to open up conversations to strangers. Likely, as pointed out by The Register's Kelly Fiveash, the aim is to "juice up more ad revenue."

As it is, Facebook is happy to point out, "roughly a Super Bowl-sized audience" engages with the social network every night, during "primetime television alone."

Take Game of Thrones, for example, for which the recent, remarkably gory episode "Red Wedding" got over 1.5 million mentions on Facebook. That's not too shabby, given that 5.2 million people watched it.

How will this impact your privacy? It shouldn't, if you avoid using hashtags to get Facebook Nation to follow your conversations.

#privacyCurrently, users control the audience for their posts, including those with hashtags.

Unfortunately, there have been far too many users who don't control who sees their posts, even in the pre-hashtag world.

As Consumer Reports reported a year ago, 13 million US Facebook users weren't using, or were oblivious to, privacy controls.

At the time, Consumer Reports found that in the prior 12 months, Facebook users "liked", updated their profiles, and posted status updates to produce these data points at these rates:

39.3 million identified a family member in a profile20.4 million included their birth date and year in their profile7.7 million "liked" a Facebook page pertaining to a religious affiliation4.6 million discussed their love life on their wall2.6 million discussed their recreational use of alcohol on their wall2.3 million "liked" a page regarding sexual orientation

If you want to ensure that hashtags don't get the privacy-oblivious into even hotter water, do them a favor and educate them on how to work Facebook privacy controls.

Japan to test phones which will alert if it sounds like you are being scammed

The scam detection system, which was first announced in March, claims to be able to recognise a phone scammer by combining voice intonation analysis with keyword recognition.

Japan's elderly population is frequently victimized by phone scams, with criminals often posing as acquaintances or authority figures such as police or lawyers.

When criminals pose as acquaintances, they often try to convince their targeted victims that they're in trouble and need money transferred to an account to bail them out.

The system works by detecting the changes in the voice pitch and levels that are common in the intonations of stressed-out victims, by recognising typical words used by voice scammers - "indebtedness," "compensation," "debt," or "repayment," for example - and by alerting family members or others that something's up.

Fujitsu and Nagoya University will equip landlines with detection devices in 100 Okayama Prefecture homes.

When a possible scam occurs, the alarm messages will go out to family members, the police, the bank, and Fujitsu.

On receiving the message, family members will contact the participant and ask what happened, to determine whether the call was in fact a scam.

Meanwhile, the police will immediately visit the participant's house to assess the situation.

Simultaneously; the bank will temporarily halt payment transactions from whatever account was designated by the participant for use in the trial. .

A scam call is detected

The trials will be carried out in collaboration with the Okayama Prefectural Police, the Okayama Pref. Information Communications unit of the National Police Agency's Chugoku Regional Police Bureau, and The Chugoku Bank.

The voice recognition part of the system might sound like eavesdropping, but Fujitsu promises that it's not.

Rather, the software ignores everything except the number of times a caller uses typical scam words, based on a keyword list provided by Japan's National Police Academy and on recordings of actual remittance-solicitation phone scams.

Man on phoneThe technology is designed to recognise a condition known as "overtrust."

Overtrust occurs when victims are overwhelmed with distressing information and lose their powers of judgment.

Aa Fujitsu has described it, there are limits to human powers of perception and judgment. When overwhelmed with distressing information, some people, without knowing it, lose the capacity to objectively evaluate information provided by another party.

When overtrust occurs, victims tend to believe everything they're told - a situation that makes them vulnerable to getting fleeced by scammers.

It's not just the elderly who are susceptible, of course. The quick flash of a toy plastic police badge once caused me and a companion to hand over our wallets when we were touring Athens.

Fortunately, our scammers were overly greedy: they wanted more money than the pittance we had in our wallets and handed them back, asking to see our "hidden" money.

Our intonations and voice levels were likely steeped in stress.

I likely would, particularly were they to come up with a version I could wear around my neck when visiting foreign lands, where I emit the unmistakable aroma of clueless tourist.

FBI investigates Santa Clara University hack which changed exam grades

A plus gradeThe FBI is investigating a hack against Santa Clara University's computer system, after someone broke into the network and changed the grades of some undergraduate students.

Officials at the University say that they have reviewed tens of thousands of records dating back to 2000, and have identified a number of unauthorised changes in grades belonging to a small number of current students and about 60 former undergraduates.

Some grades are said to have been changed from an "F" to an "A".

25-year-old electrical engineering student Mark Loiseau tweeted that three FBI agents arrived to question him in his off-campus apartment, brandishining hundreds of pages of his Verizon cellphone records.

According to the San Jose Mercury News, Loiseau has denied any involvement in the hack.

The security breach is believed to have taken place between June 2010 and July of this year, according to University President Michael Engh. Fortunately, he claims that no evidence has been found that the personal information of students or staff was accessed.

Dennis Jacobs, Santa Clara University's provost and vice president for academic affairs says that that the institution is taking the security breach seriously and that the university is "reviewing and enhancing all security measures to reduce the likelihood of any intrusion in the future."

No arrests have yet been made by the authorities, but the natural suspicion must be that a current or former student may be responsible for the hack. It's essential that all young people learn that breaking without permission into computer systems is not a prank, and that the integrity of other people's data needs to be treated with respect.

Of course, it's far from the first time that schools have found themselves in the firing line of hackers - I'm reminded, for instance, of the case of the American teenager who was accused of installing spyware onto school computers or the Indian Minister who blamed a virus for incorrect exam results.

No doubt this won't be the last time we hear about educational establishments find themselves dealing with cybercrime on their doorstep.
